How many visits does it take to fix a street light? In the case of a lamp in Highfield Avenue and the answer seems to be 11 according to Cllr David Ward who has been tracking its progress
The lamp in question was knocked down by a car on Sunday 16th November.
1. The first visit was by the council who removed light quickly
2. The second visit was by a contractor or electricity company who disconnected the cable also quickly.
3. The third visit was by a contractor or electricity company "made a joint on live electric cable"
4. The fourth was the electricity company who carried out a "check"
5. On the fifth visit in December a white mark was painted on the pavement
6. On the sixth visit a hole was dug
7. On the seventh visit the light was installed and
8. On the eighth visit it was connected up
9. Next the hole surrounding the lamp was filled in
10. Then the flags were re-laid
11. And finally, on 28th January, the barriers round the hole were removed!
Cllr Ward said
" I have documented this gripping saga from start to finish. I can't help thinking that after speedy action to deal with the initial accident there must be a better way and that some of these jobs could have been done on one visit instead of several. I have written to the Council's senior lighting engineer asking him how it could possibly take this long to fix one lamp and whether they can do it more efficiently in the future."
