The year 2007 was the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade and British action in ending the slave trade. However there are still an estimated 12.3 million people across the world who are still in slavery today. They are forced to work for little or no pay and denied their most basic human right of freedom.

David says "Millions of men, women and children around the world are forced to lead lives as slaves. Although this exploitation is often not called slavery, the conditions are the same. People are sold like objects, forced to work for little or no pay and are at the mercy of their 'employers'."

The UK Anti-Slavery Day Act was passed into law in April 2010, and aims to raise awareness of the dangers and consequences of modern-day slavery and human trafficking.

Stephanie Baker, Store Manager of the Body Shop, Bradford says "Every year an estimated 1.2 million children and young people are trafficked becoming victims of sexual exploitation and abuse. The Body Shop and ECPAT, united in their effort to bring about social change, launched a petition in July to enable the public to play a proactive role in the abolition of sex trafficking of children and young people. The petition is active in sixty six countries around the world and has 2,852,874 signatures to date. We are trying to get as many signatures as possible and are asking for your support to raise awareness about the stop sex trafficking campaign and to continue the many years of campaigning and defending human rights that was started by Dame Anita Roddick in 1976. We are delighted that David Ward MP is joining us and highlighting our campaign."

David says "Although over 200 years have past since the abolition of the slave trade this is a very real modern day problem. I would ask everyone to join with the Body Shop and ECPAT and sign the petition. Trafficking affects children and their families across the world."

People across Britain are asked being asked to sign an anti-trafficking petition as part of a three year long campaign to combat child trafficking. The petition calls for a system of guardianship that would mean that every trafficked child would have a guardian who would have parental responsibility and provide care and support to the child. Ensure that every child would receive the educational, medical, practical and legal support they need to help rebuild their lives and protect the child from further exploitation and harm from their traffickers.
