David Ward MP is visiting Canterbury Children's Centre to find out more about the help being given to people who are having problems staying warm.
Commenting, David Ward said:
"The number of people in fuel poverty is increasing every year due to rising energy bills. The Warm Homes Campaign has identified 13% of households who live in fuel poverty in our area. That means they are having to pay more than 10% of their income just to heat their homes to a reasonable level.
"We can all remember what last winter was like. Harsh winters affect everyone but older people are hit particularly hard. There were nearly 35,000 deaths due to cold last winter and 90% of these were pensioners. It is shocking that we allow so many people to die from cold in such a wealthy country.
"The Coalition is already placing new obligations on energy companies to help less well off families and vulnerable people to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. This will be combined with a new scheme allowing insulation measures to be paid for through savings on energy bills, and tough new regulations on irresponsible private land lords.
"Tackling this problem must be at the heart of the Government's energy policy."
