David encourages people in Bradford to check their pulse

June 15, 2011 6:04 PM

David getting his pulse checkedMP for Bradford East, David Ward, this week took part in an event to help raise awareness of the importance of pulse checks as part of World Heart Rhythm Week.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of Atrial Fibrillation (AF), the most common heart rhythm disorder in the UK. It is estimated that the number of people affected by AF is in excess of one million. It is also responsible for 18%-20% of all strokes in the UK.

A simple pulse check is a quick and easy way of detecting AF and other heart rhythm disorders. It only takes four simple steps to learn how to take your pulse. More information can be found at www.knowyourpulse.org.

Commenting, David Ward said:

"500 people in Bradford may be suffering from this life threatening condition without any obvious symptoms. I fully support this campaign to encourage people to check their pulse. It is astonishing to think that such a simple test could help diagnose and treat a condition which can have such serious consequences.

"I fully support the local Primary Care Trust's effort to make sure that GPs check their patients' pulse as a matter of routine. I also urge everyone to learn how to take their own pulse so they can check themselves for this condition."
