David calls for new Minister to protect rights of older people

October 21, 2011 11:56 AM

Bradford MP David Ward has signed a Parliamentary motion calling for the creation of a dedicated Government Minister for Older People.

Older people are now one of the largest groups in the United Kingdom, and make up 40% of voters. Despite this, there is no Government minister dedicated to the well-being of older people. The Grey Pride campaign aims to celebrate and champion older people, giving them a voice at the highest level.

Commenting, David said:

"Older people already make up 25 per cent of the population and this is only set to increase as life expectancy continues to rise and people live happily into older age. But the services that older people need are spread across many different Government departments and there has been a lack of joined thinking in some descisions which have been taken."

"I want to ensure that older people living in Bradford are represented at the highest political level and enjoy dignity and respect in their later years. Creating a dedicated minister to champion the needs of older people right across Goverment would be a vital first step towards achieving that."

The petition calling for a Minister for Older People has been set up by Anchor, a social care and housing provider. You can sign the petition at www.greypride.org.uk.
