A pioneering scheme to help young people who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEETs) was launched today.
It will target the estimated 7,000 16-17-year-old NEETs in the Yorkshire and the Humber region and is part of Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg's Youth Contract.
The charities and business that will provide this service have an excellent track record of getting young people into education, training, or work and will be paid by results. The programme will focus on the UK's 55,000 16-17 year old NEETs with no GCSEs at A* to C, who are at the highest risk of long-term disengagement.
Commenting, David said:
"The tough economic climate is making it very difficult for many young people trying to make a start in life. Long periods of unemployment can damage people's health and earning potential for decades and potentially leave them permenantly disengaged from society.
This is a ticking time bomb in a place like Bradford and I welcome the fact that the Government is taking it seriously. The scheme announced today will provide personal, targeted and expert support to help Bradford's young people get an education or start a career.
This will work by paying the charities and businesses who understand the local situation to do whatever it takes to get young people back on their feet. All they need to do in return is to get results."
