Poor careers advice letting our young people down

July 31, 2012 12:24 PM

David with Bradford College StudentsBradford MP David Ward is asking for people's views on how careers on how careers advice can be improved.

As a member of the Education Select Committee, David Ward will be taking part in an inquiry into the current arrangements. The inquiry will be launched in Yorkshire on Monday 22nd October, starting around 9.30am.

The inquiry will investigate careers guidance for young people, in the light of the new statutory duty on schools to secure access to independent and impartial careers guidance for their pupils in years 9-11 from September 2012.

David has urged anyone wanting to take part in the Inquiry to call his constituency office on 01274 458 010.

Commenting, David said:

"With the economy is such a precarious position, the advice given in schools is vital to our young people's future employment prospects. They people need good advice so that they can make the right choices to prepare them for a very difficult job market. Too often advice has been pathch, poor quality and imporsanal, and this is badly letting young people down."

"We need a careers service that is designed to help the needs of the local area. I'm delighted that the Committee has agreed to visit areas such as Bradford. I would therefore urge as many people as possible to come and see me over the next few months to tell me about their experiences. I want to hear what's working and what needs improving. Our careers service must meet the needs of the people of Bradford."
