MP speaks about building community cohesion in Bradford

October 2, 2012 9:41 AM

Bradford East MP, David Ward, spoke out at an event organised by the Consortia of Ethnic Minority Organisations (COEMO) on what work needs to be done in Bradford to build an inclusive community.

David was one of the keynote speakers who discussed in length how prejudices should be tackled and the importance of dealing with tensions and barriers that currently exist and may arise in the future.

Commenting, David said:

"Prejudices are often born out of ignorance of another culture, another religion and of anything that is different from what we perceive to be the norm. To tackle prejudices head on we need to confront the fundamental problem which is ignorance."

"For any community to prosper there needs to be greater levels of understanding and tolerance. The only thing we should not tolerate is intolerance."

"The riots we have had in the past in Bradford have shown the devastating consequences of allowing prejudices to fester. As a community in Bradford we must never stop working to deal with any prejudices that may exist so that we have a bright present and future in Bradford"
