Bradford MP David Ward has hand delivered a letter from the children of Idle CofE and Thackley primary schools to the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister. The letter calls on the Government to do more to expand educational opportunities for the world's poorest children.
The letters were accompanied by dozens of colourful medals, handmade by the children.
In 2000 the world's developed nations made a commitment to give all children access to a basic primary education by 2015, as part of the Millennium Development Goals. Although significant progress has been made, 67 million children are still missing out on this fundamental human right.
Commenting, David said:
"Children all over the world deserve to the chance to better themselves and climb out of poverty through education. The children of Idle CofE and Thackley Primary have recognised that it is our duty to help those who are less fortunate than us to have the same basic educational opportunities we have here in the UK.
"I was very impressed by the passion and awareness that the children showed in their notes to me explaining their support for the Send My Friend to School campaign, and I took great pleasure in delivering them to Downing Street.
"It's incredibly important that the Prime Minister knows about the groundswell of support for maintaining our aid budget for educating primary school children all over the world, and I look forward to sharing his response with the children."
