David Ward has attacked the The Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove MP for rushing through new laws that will allow any school to apply for academy status and withdraw from local authority control. Under the Academies Bill, schools who apply for academy status will no longer be under the control of the local authority and they will be able to set their own curriculum.
Other planned changes in the bill will see the creation of 'free schools'. This would mean any local group could set up their own school, David Ward said, "How can we afford brand new schools when some of our existing schools are in desperate need of improvement".
The Academies Bill has been pushed through Parliament before the summer holidays. David said "This is not an emergency law and it should have been given the time to be fully consulted on. It is not good enough to just wait and see how it will work out".
