David Ward speaks out against Academies Bill

July 27, 2010 9:51 AM

David WardDavid Ward has attacked the The Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove MP for rushing through new laws that will allow any school to apply for academy status and withdraw from local authority control. Under the Academies Bill, schools who apply for academy status will no longer be under the control of the local authority and they will be able to set their own curriculum.

Other planned changes in the bill will see the creation of 'free schools'. This would mean any local group could set up their own school, David Ward said, "How can we afford brand new schools when some of our existing schools are in desperate need of improvement".

The Academies Bill has been pushed through Parliament before the summer holidays. David said "This is not an emergency law and it should have been given the time to be fully consulted on. It is not good enough to just wait and see how it will work out".

If you are a resident of the Bradford East constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
