Don't stop cheques - Ward tells Payments Council

November 9, 2010 12:00 AM

Bradford MP, David Ward, will today meet with representatives of the Payments Council to demand that they call a halt to their plans to abolish cheques.

The organisation - which represents the major banks as well as other payment providers such as PayPal - plans to phase out all cheques by 2018, despite calls from consumers, small businesses and charities that they still value this service.

David's petition to save cheques has received over 500 signatures from members of the public in its first week.

Commenting, David Ward said:

"Pressure is building on the Payments Council to look again at this decision. They will have some difficult questions to answer today.

"We cannot let the banks off the hook on this. Even the Payment's Councils own figures suggest that there will still be 2 million cheques issued every day in 2018.

"They have to start listening to consumers, charities and small businesses who are saying that this decision would cause major problems for them.

"We have to send a clear message that people still value this service."

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
