MP expresses concern over school sports funding changes

December 1, 2010 12:00 AM

bradfordcityBradford MP, David Ward has expressed concern over changes to sports funding affecting School Sports Partnerships which he has called "successful" and "good value for money."

Under the Government's plans, money to fund sport in schools will no longer be ring-fenced. The money previously set aside for the sport will go into the schools budget, and head teachers will decide how much money to allocate towards sport.

Commenting, David Ward said:

"School Sport Partnerships in Bradford have been successful at encouraging more school children to be physically active. They play an important role in fighting childhood obesity and represent good value for money.

"The Government's decision to move funding away from sport is extremely short-sighted. If the money isn't ring-fenced, there is a danger that head teachers will fail to prioritise this area which would be a big step backwards in encouraging the participation of young people in sport and physical activity."
