David Ward has welcomed the announcement of new measures to clamp-down on uninsured drivers

The Government is introducing a new offence of keeping a vehicle whilst uninsured which will come into force in the Spring. This will be combined with a new enforcement scheme which will allow uninsured drivers to be continuously identified by matching the DVLA driver's database with the motor insurance database.

In a letter to David Ward MP, the Transport Minister Mike Penning wrote:

"The Government is working in collaboration with the insurance industry to implement continuous insurance enforcement early in 2011.

"The scheme will provide a new fixed penalty for people who ignore official reminders that their insurance has expired and offenders risk having their vehicle seized and destroyed.

"What is certain is that in the future motorists will find it very much harder to evade detection and penalties if they drive vehicles without insurance."

Commenting, David Ward said:

"Selfish uninsured drivers are costing responsible Bradford motorists massive amounts of money. In parts of the city nearly half of all cars are uninsured. Some constituents have come to me with car insurance quotes in excess of £12,000.

"I wrote to ministers at the end of last year asking what they were doing to tighten up on this issue and I am delighted that the Coalition have moved so quickly after taking office.

"Once they come into force the new measures will save motorists in Bradford thousands of pounds every year."

If you are a resident of the Bradford East constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
