David Ward welcomes cheques enquiry

April 18, 2011 10:26 AM

Save Our ChequeDavid Ward MP has welcomed the announcement that the Treasury Select Committee are to reopen their enquiry into the future of cheques.

The influential committee of MPs will examine the Payments Council's decision to phase cheques out by 2018 and make recommendations to the Government.

David Ward has been at the forefront of the campaign to save the cheque and has introduced a Bill in Parliament to stop their abolition.

Commenting, David Ward said:

"This is fantastic news. Cheques remain a hugely popular method of payment with over 4 million issued every day. Since I introduced my Bill to save the cheque I have been inundated with letters of support from the public and hundreds of people are signing our petition every week.

"It's becoming clear that the Payments Council have rushed this decision with inadequate consultation and without a proper cost benefit analysis. It cannot be right that what is, in effect, a cartel should be allowed to take the decision on cheques' future, particularly when they have a huge vested interest in getting rid of them.

"I welcome the news that the Committee are going to take an objective look at the real impact that the abolition of cheques would have on the people, small businesses and charities who value them."

If you are a resident of the Bradford East constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
