April 19, 2011 2:56 PM

Simon Hughes and David Ward in Q&A session at Carlton Bolling CollegeStudents at Carlton Bolling College have been asked to contribute to a report on improving access to education, to be prepared by the Government's Advocate forAccess to Education, Simon Hughes.

Mr Hughes joined David Ward MP on a visit to the College last week where they held a Q&A session with pupils which covered the students' courses and aspirations, student finance, careers advice and the newly announced replacement for the Education Maintenance Allowance.

The students will now continue to feed in their ideas and suggestions for Simon Hughes' final report to the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, which will be published in June.

Students at Carlton Bolling College will also prepare articles on the meeting for a monthly magazine published by the local regeneration board, Inspired Neighbourhoods.

Commenting Simon Hughes said:

"I was made to feel very welcome at Carlton Bolling College. It was a great opportunity to find out how students in Bradford really feel about their education and how the Government can best support them.

"I have asked the students at Carlton Bolling to continue to feed in their ideas and suggestions to me as I prepare my report for the Prime Minister and Deputy
Prime Minister on improving access to education."

Commenting, David Ward said:

David Ward and Simon Hughes with Carlton Bolling students and staff"It was very useful for Simon to visit Bradford and to hear the views of young people here. The students we met were confident and engaged, and put their views across very clearly.

"Simon has a very important role in shaping the future of our education system. It is vital that we get these issues right if we are to break down the barriers which prevent some young people in Bradford from fulfilling their maximum potential."

Commenting, Carlton Bolling Head Teacher, Chris Robinson, said:

"It was excellent for Simon to have an opportunity to meet the young people of Carlton Bolling and BD3. They found it inspiring to know that they could help formulate the overall direction of government policy. It was outstanding moment to see him recognise the potential of the young people of Carlton Bolling."

If you are a resident of the Bradford East constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
