David Ward hits out at English language funding cuts

May 3, 2011 2:57 PM

Bradford MP, David Ward, has spoken out against plans to cut funding for the provision of basic English language tuition. David Ward

In the Comprehensive Spending Review last Autumn, the Chancellor proposed reducing funding for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). While funding will be maintained for those in search of work, other recipients will have to meet part of the cost of their courses themselves.

Speaking in a debate in the House of Commons, David Ward said that the funding cuts would would be bad for social cohesion in Bradford and would lead to more spending on translators.

Commenting, David Ward said:

"These courses are a lifeline for many people, giving them the basic skills they need to get a job or to talk to a doctor or to their childrens teacher. Cutting funding risks making ESOL courses unaffordable for those who need them most.

"More importantly speaking Enlgish is vital if people are to be a successful part of our society. We know the cost of poor social cohesion in Bradford and this is a cost we cannot afford."
