Bradford MP David Ward has called for manufacturing to play a greater role in driving the UK's economic recovery.
Manufacturing will drive the economic recovery
In a Parliamentary debate on the future of manufacturing, David Ward has highlighted the contribution that manufacturing makes to Bradford's economy and pressed for additional support to help manufacturing businesses grow and create jobs in Bradford.
Commenting, David Ward said:
"Manufacturing was ignored by the last Government. In Bradford we lost 15,000 manufacturing jobs over Labour's 13 years in power. In spite of this neglect manufacturing has helped see us through the recession after financial services had collapsed. It's time we appreciated the massive contribution that manufacturing makes to our economy.
"Boosting manufacturing is absolutely essential if we want to rebalance our economy away from financial services and the city, and Bradford needs to play a role in that. We are a city built on manufacturing in the wool industry and we still have the biggest wool scouring operation in the world working off Birksland Street and exporting all over the world.
"We have big advantages for manufacturing, including a large skilled workforce, which is why leading manufacturers in areas from electronics to chemicals still choose to base themselves in Bradford. We need to build on our manufacturing heritage and make ourselves a base for the new high tech industries which will create sustainable growth and jobs in the future."
